Corn Rootworm Gallery

Corn Rootworm (CRW)


When: Early June to mid July (larvae) and mid July to September (adults)

Damage: Larvae feed on roots and cause "goosenecking" in stalks. Adults leave feeding tracks on leaf tissue and clip silks.

European Chafer (White Grub)


When: May to early June

Damage:  Look for stunted or wilting plants

Flea Beetles


When: Early May to the end of June

Damage: Flea beetles feed on leaf tissue; look for feeding tracks running parallel to leaf veins on the upper surface of the leaf.

Wireworm

When: Beginning of May until early-mid June

Damage: Wireworms feed on seed and cause plant stunting/wilting.

Fall Armyworm

When: Mid July to the end of September

Damage: Larvae feed on leaf tissue, tassels, and ears.  On the leaves, look for ragged holes, and on the ears, look for a side entry hole and feeding throughout.

True Armyworm

When: Late May to mid July

Damage: Larvae feed on leaf tissue, either leaving ragged holes or eating away the entire leaf except the midrib.

Black Cutworm

When: Beginning of May to mid June

Damage: Look for stunted/wilting or cut plants and for ragged holes in the leaves.

Corn Borer Gallery


European Corn Borer (ECB)

When: Mid June to the end of September

Damage: At the whorl stage, look for pinhole feeding on leaves.  Later in the season, look for broken tassels, frass at axils, and broken stalks caused by tunneling.  ECB also feed on ears.

Corn Earworm

When: Mid July through the end of September

Damage: Feeding on tassels and ears.  Look for clipped silks and ear feeding concentrated at the tip with no side hole.

When: Mid July to the end of September

Damage: WBC feed on ears and tassels; look for clipped silks and feeding throughout ear with a side entry hole.
